Wes Morehead, Director of Bands
Wes Morehead is in his 19th year of teaching band in Mississippi and 10th in the district. He is currently Director of Bands for the Gulfport School District. He oversees all of the instrumental wind programs for the district. He conducts the Symphonic Band, is the visual designer for the marching band, and oversees the winter guard program. Mr. Morehead is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a BMEd and William Carey University with a MM. His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, MS Bandmasters Association (MBA), Gulf Coast Band Directors Association (GCBDA), and American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA. A graduate of Castle High School in Newburgh, IN, Mr. Morehead is an alumni of Star of Indiana Drum and Bugle Corps, Brass Theater with Canadian Brass and the Broadway production of Blast!
Dee Dee Pitts, Assistant Band Director at Gulfport High School; Middle School Band Coordinator
Dorshandrell “Dee Dee” Pitts is in her 14th year of teaching band in Mississippi. She is currently in her tenth year with the Gulfport School District where she serves as the Assistant Director of Bands for Gulfport High School. Ms. Pitts received her Bachelor of Music Education Degree from Delta State University and her Masters of Music in Conducting Degree from the American Band College through Southern Oregon University. She is also a National Board Certified teacher. Ms. Pitts is a member of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association, American School Band Director’s Association, Gulf Coast Band Director’s Association where she serves as President, and Phi Beta Mu. Ms. Pitts has served as a guest clinician throughout the state of Mississippi and surrounding areas, and has consistently produced Superior bands throughout her career. She has an active private studio and is the lead Trombonist for the Coast Big Band.
Jimi Brown, Director of Percussion
Mr. Brown graduated from Meridian High School, in Meridian, MS. He went to Hinds Community College for 2 years, where he received the Outstanding Music Major Award. He was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for 2-year colleges. After completing the music education and core requirements at Hinds, he transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education with percussion emphasis. While at USM, he studied with Dr. John Wooton, director of percussion studies and was a member of Phi Boota Roota (percussion fraternity). He performed with several ensembles such as: Community Steel Band, Southern Miss Steel Pan Orchestra (SOMISPO), Down Isle Steel Band, Percussion Ensemble, Samba Band, Symphonic Winds, and Wind Ensemble (under the direction of Dr. Thomas Fraschillo). After earning a BME from the University of Southern Mississippi, he taught for 2 years in the Stone School District as an Assistant Band Director/Percussion Instructor.
